A life against the wind

I would describe this book as a “Logbook” of my life, from birth to the present day. Having never kept a diary has forced me to draw on my recollections, memories that come back to the mind of all who move towards old age. Above all however, it was written in a deliberate simple way and without any pretence and I believe that those who have the patience to read until the last page, will certainly concur with me.

For colleagues that read it, it will hopefully be a way to relive experiences that have been part of their lives on the ocean. If it is browsed by people who intend to travel down the same path, they will have the opportunity to take a look at what awaits them in their future career. If the reader has no nautical connection, it will give them an idea of the life of a seafarer.

Why? Because this story, unlike many others, is a true account   that pays tribute to the sailors and workers of the sea. I have read many books   where they have been described as “men of steel” who are “honest, tough and incorruptible.” The facts recounted in my book, like the ships, are as real as the men who feature throughout. In some cases I have deliberately avoided putting names to the subjects, but those who read this will know whom I’m referring to. In other cases, the names could not be omitted. I have dedicated several chapters to the peasants, and to their lifestyle, the place where I was born and still I live. I have spoken in depth about their agricultural techniques, which are part of the culture of the Italy that I know and love.
